Lady Mounts split weekend games

ImageAfter a heart-breaking loss a night earlier, the Mounts needed to come back strong Saturday (12/9) against a very good Manheim Central team. In a game that was close throughout, Ephrata made the key plays down the stretch to pull out a 53-47 victory.

The Barons led by a point at the half, but a 9-2 run at the start of the third quarter put Ephrata in front, 35-29. The Mounts stretched the lead to 45-37 in the middle of the fourth, thanks in part to back-to-back scores from Brynn Lyons. But Manheim Central rallied with a 10-4 run to make the score 49-47 Ephrata with less than a minute to play.

On the ensuing Manheim Central possession, junior Gabbie Hondros blocked a game-tying shot attempt, and Christine Weaver was fouled fighting for the rebound. After struggling from the line earlier in the game, Weaver hit the two huge free throws to put Ephrata (3-2) up by four with 30 seconds to play. She then took a charge on the next trip, helping clinch the win.

Arielle Gordon scored a career high 17 points, including 8 of 12 from the free throw line. Hondros had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Weaver had 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals, while Nicole Martin had 6 points and 6 rebounds.

The Ephrata JV suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Manheim Central JV, 49-26. Melanie Andrew led the Mounts JV (2-1) with 7 points. Jan Woolley added 6 points and 3 steals.

On Friday night (12/8) The Mounts faced off against Lancaster Mennonite. The game was an instant classic, as the Mounts dominated the second half, rallying from a 19-point deficit. Ephrata came back again, from 5 points down in the final minute to tie the game. But Lancaster Mennonite's Katelyn Vanderhoff rescued the Blazers with a buzzer-beating 14 foot jumper just inside the foul line to win the game, 65-63.

LMH dominated the opening half, using a 14-2 second-quarter run to break the game open and take a 39-20 lead into the break. They still held their big lead, at 46-27 with 3 minutes left in the third.

The Mounts then went on a 22-2 tear in just four and a half minutes to claim a 49-48 lead. The run included 9 points from sophomore Aly Goodman. Goodman had a tremendous game, pouring in a career high 23 points, including a highlight film soaring putback of her own missed three-point shot.

LMH was able to build their lead back to 58-53 late in fourth. Claire Woolley made a clutch jumper but LMH answered to go up 61-55. Christine Weaver followed with a three-point play but again LMH scored on the other end, making it 63-58 with under a minute to play.

Brynn Lyons followed by draining a three-point shot with 40 seconds left, cutting the margin to 2. Goodman then stole a pass a midcourt, and the Mounts quickly converted, finding Audrey Thorp for the game-tying basket with 27 seconds to play. The Blazers (4-1) advanced the ball and, after a timeout, set up the game-winning play.

Arielle Gordon had a season-high 10 assists, while adding 7 points and 7 rebounds for Ephrata. Goodman tacked on 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 6 steals in the best game of her short career. Lyons added 11 points and 6 boards.

Vanderhoff led LMH with 18 points. The Blazers connected on 7 of 12 three-point attempts and 16 of 18 free throw attempts in the game.

The Ephrata JV dominated the first half and cruised to a 53-43 win. Melanie Andrew scored 8 of her game-high 12 points during a 35-point first half. Linda Wilson added 10 points and Emily McHenry added 9.
