Hempfield slips by Mounts

Hempfield, the defending L-L League champions, escaped with a 6-4 win over Ephrata in the L-L League semifinals Wednesday at Comet Field."This is why you work so hard in the offseason and during the season. To get the opportunity to play in a championship game," said Hempfield coach Doug Bailey.
Bailey's squad had its hands full against Ephrata, the Section Two champions.
Tucker Keefer put the Mountaineers (14-5) on the board first before Drew Cortese, a long pole midfielder, evened the contest on a shot with 5:11 left in the first for the Black Knights (18-1).
Phil Hess gave Ephrata the lead again with a goal early in the second quarter before Pat Brogan and Michael Ondrusek scored consecutive goals to put Hempfield in front, 3-2, at halftime.
"I was pleased with how we started the game," Ephrata coach Kevin Pletz said. "We still didn't do exactly what we wanted from our offense, though. We had some shots that we didn't capitalize on."
Cortese netted his second shot of the game in the third to put the Knights ahead 4-2 heading into the fourth.
"We have all of our guys shoot on goal," Bailey said, referring to a long pole scoring twice in a game. "Both goals were on transition."
Justin Goshert made it a one-point game with a score at 10:28 in the fourth before Andrew Meier's diving shot kept the Knights ahead, 5-3.
Andy Sweigart and Ondrusek traded goals to end the game.
