The Week in Review

ImageMy hours at my real job have adjusted for the Winter season so updates in the morning will be harder for me then normal. I'll keep doing the best I can but if coaches could supply game wrap-ups via email, that would be awesome.

The Winter season kicked into high gear last week and I'll try and do a quick recap here.

ImageThe Ice Hockey team way back on 11/18 trounced Northern Lebanon with a mercy-rule enforced 11-0 victory. The box score will reveal another fine game by Shane Allen (2 goals, 2 assists) and Brandon Pike (2 goals, 3 assists).

Last Monday (12/5) The Mounts returned to the ice and put 11 more goals in the net as they skated to an 11-4 (box score) victory over Cedar Crest. Brandon Pke remained on fire scoring 4 goals and assisting on 2 others. While Shane Allen (2 goals, 1 assist) also helped with the scoring.

And on Friday (12/9) with the county frozen over from our first snow storm the Mounts fittingly were on the ice as the came up with a huge section win over Cocalico 5-4 (box score). Pike again remained hot, scoring 4 goals in consecutive games. The loss was the first on the season for the Eagles.

The Mounts (4-1) are next on the ice Wednesday (12/14) when they take on ELCO (2-3-1) at 7:00.

ImageThe Boys Basketball team started the season just like they did last year dropping their first two games in the York Suburban tip-off tournament. The Mounts lost on Friday night 71-67. Paul McHenry led the Mounts with 23 points. Saturday in the consulation game the Mounts again came up short losing to Cumberland Valley 57-52, led once again by McHenry (18 points).

On Saturday (12/10) the Mounts hosted their first home game of the season and soundly handed Manheim Central a 71-44 loss. McHenry for the third straight game led the Mounts with 17 points.

The girls team hasn't faired any better losing their first three games despite Marcy Dull's scoring efforts. Marcy is well on her way to become the sixth girl to score 1000 points in Ephrata history. She scored 22 point in a 69-58 loss to Wilson on Saturday (12/3), 20 points in a 60-45 loss to Elco on Tuesday (12/6), and 17 points on Saturday (12/10) in a 51-60 loss to Manheim Central.

ImageThe defending state champion bowling team started the season off with a 4-0 win over Conestoga Valley. Chelsea Weik had a high game of 229, while Ashlee Eberhart had a high series of 601.

From there it was on to the 3rd Annual Girls Division Icebreaker Classic, On Saturday December 10 held at Limerick Bowl. In the qualifying round, the girls bowled games of 922, 1062, and 1005 to qualify as the #1 seed entering the bracket finals. The team was led by Christine Gummel with games of 226, 225, and 202 for a 653 series and Ashlee Eberhart with games of 192, 202, and 236 for a 630 series.

The team had a bye in the first round of the finals, and then they faced Governor Mifflin in the second round. The game came down to the 10th frame with Ephrata prevailing 1008 to 975. The team was led by Chelsea Weik with a 235 and Catlin Edwards with a 229.

The girls moved on to face Neshaminy in the finals. After a slow start, they pulled away to a 969 to 841 victory to give them their second straight Icebreaker Classic Girls Division Team Championship. The team was led by Chelsea Weik with a 229 and Christine Gummel with a 213. Christine Gummel and Ashlee Eberhart were named to the All Icebreaker Team for their overall performance.

The team returned to league play Monday (12/12) with a 3-1 win over Lampeter-Strasburg, this time the Mounts were led by Chelsea Weik (211-204-186; 601) and Christine Gummell (238-221-194; 653).

ImageThe wrestling team is off to a slow start this season. The finished 10th in their own tournament (out of 11 teams) to start the season. James Zimmerman (2nd) and Jordan Becker (4th) earned individual marks for the Mounts.

The Mounts then faced Hempfield (12/6) and was soundly defeated 56-15. Hanna (119), Crowther (145), and Lillis (215) were the only winners for Ephrata.

The Mounts then competed in the Mule Classic held at the Solanco High School, unfortunately no Mount placed in the top 4, and the Mounts finished in 19th place out of 20 teams.

ImageLast but not least is the swim team. The Girls team is off to one of their better starts in recent years as the number of swimmers has increased for both the boy's and the girl's teams. The girls team won on Thursday (12/8) 95-75 over Warwick.

They followed up that win with a 119-51 win over Conestoga Valley on Monday afternoon (12/12).

The boys swam well but lost to Warwick 115-40. Justin Brown picked up two individual wins in the 50 and 100 free.

Monday (12/12) the Mounts didn't fair as well losing to Conestoga Valley 129-26. Conestoga Valley ended up sweeping all the events on this day.
