Eagles rush past Mounts in record fashion

It's just the nature of the Backyard Brawl.

When Cocalico and Ephrata meet the game is always close. Even when the Eagles rush for a school-record 434 yards, which is exactly what they did Friday night.

Cocalico got the game-winning touchdown with 1:58 to play from fullback Devin Orme, and Cocalico beat Ephrata 34-31 in Section Two play.

"I was very excited with the effort that the (offensive) line gave," said Cocalico coach Dave Gingrich. "They made some great holes and the backs ran extremely hard and we did a good job executing the offense."


Mike Burkholder - The scouting report on the two teams was that Ephrata (1-2 overall, 1-1 Section Two) had trouble stopping the run and Cocalico (2-1 overall, 1-0 Section Two) the pass. Neither team bucked the trend.<br /> <br /> Ephrata quarterback Seth Zimmerman threw for 223 yards and three TDs, connecting with Kyle Sensenig on all three.<br /> <br /> Kreider, Orme, and Pannebecker each came at Ephrata with a different running style, and Kreider's decision-making sprung them for big gains.<br /> <br /> "We have quick guards and with Orme, (the defense) is going to go after him and that gets the flow going the opposite way. So that was helpful that I had so many options," Kreider said.<br /> <br /> Even though Cocalico rushed for a school-record in yards, Ephrata hung tough, even leading the game in the third quarter, 24-21.<br /> <br /> "They're a good team and good teams hang around. I was anxious until the clock was at zero-zero," Gingrich said.<br /> <br /> Ephrata took an early 7-0 advantage on a botched punt snap that Cocalico punter Kyle Payne got off 26 yards behind the line of scrimmage.<br /> <br /> Cocalico answered right back, on Kreider's first TD after a 10-play drive and again on an 18-yard run after a fumble recovery.<br /> <br /> Ephrata scored the next 10 points to take a 17-14 lead on an Eric Petters' field goal and a 22-yard TD strike from Zimmerman to Sensenig. The Mounts couldn't stop Cocalico with 1:41 to the half as the Eagles drove down for an Orme TD with 10 seconds remaining.<br /> Ephrata came out of the gates firing in the third quarter as Zimmerman connected on receptions of 52 yards to Chris Hull and the TD of 10 yards to Sensenig.<br /> <br /> The game's turning point came when Cocalico stopped Ephrata at the 6-yard line, turned around and drove 94 yards for a Kreider TD.<br /> With the lead, Cocalico worked the clock once again, eating up much of the fourth quarter on a 12-play drive capped off by Orme to put the Eagles up 34-24, leaving the Mounts only 1:58 left.<br /> <br /> "With our offense, we run the ball so well and we can eat up a lot of the clock, which really helps when you are winning," Kreider said.<br /> Ephrata was able to get a final TD on a 47-yard pass from Zimmerman to Sensenig to keep the game in reach, but a failed onside kick sealed the win for Cocalico.<br /> </article> </div> </div> </div> <div class=
