With the sun down and the lights on at Talon Field in Denver on Thursday, Cocalico and Ephrata found themselves locked in a defensive slog, tightly called and tightly contested, as their Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two boys soccer clash pushed on well into the night.

The visiting Mountaineers, with an unblemished record on the line, outlasted their rivals, clinching the game on an Andrey Patrushev penalty kick with 6:16 remaining in the second overtime period. As the Mounts turned back the Eagles 1-0.

Red-Hot Mounts win 11th Straight


Yes, the Lampeter-Strasburg girls soccer team is on a hot streak — the Pioneers won their sixth straight match Thursday with a 2-1 victory over Manheim Central.

And that win pulled L-S into a tie with the Barons for second place in Section Two of the Lancaster-Lebanon League.

However, Ephrata is en fuego.

The Lady Mountaineers won their 11th straight match Thursday, defeating host Cocalico 2-0 to further solidify their hold on first place in the section.

Ephrata Oks Treese as New Coach


Ephrata has found its new head boys basketball coach in former Muhlenberg coach Jonathan Treese, who has been approved by the district’s school board.

The move comes just a month after Charlie Fisher resigned from the Ephrata post in order to become the new Manheim Central coach. The quick turnaround by Ephrata likely came about because the 201718 season is less than two months away.

Falcons run past Mounts


The only thing stopping the Cedar Crest onslaught Friday night was a temporary delay at the start of the second half to escort a laser-pointing fan off the premises.

The Falcons’ laser-like rushing attack, however, could not be stopped.

Cedar Crest (4-0) used a 21-point second-quarter explosion to soar past Ephrata 41-7 [boxscore] in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two opener for both teams.
