Spartans Roll to Win

Although its provenance likely goes back further, Mark Twain, and before him British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, are credited with the phrase, “There’s lies ... and then there’s statistics.”

A glance at the statistics tells the casual reader that two of the lowest- ranked defenses in the Lancaster-Lebanon League faced off Friday night in New Holland when Garden Spot hosted Ephrata in a Section Two contest.

Such a glance would also single out the Spartans as the top offensive team in the league.

Here, statistics did not lie.

Garden Spot rolled to 426 yards of offense and took advantage of three deadly turnovers to handle Ephrata, 49-7 [boxscore] on homecoming night.

Mounts Ride Rally in 2nd Half to Win

As the season winds down and the victories add up, the target the Ephrata girls soccer team carries on its collective back grows ever larger.

“Certainly, they’re the team to beat,” Lampeter- Strasburg coach Emily Lebo said, “and you can’t think that you’re up one, that it means anything.”

Up a goal at halftime Wednesday afternoon, the Pioneers appeared primed to stop the Mountaineers’ 13-match win streak, as well as extend their own seven-game streak — a streak that began in the wake of a 2-1 loss to these same Mounts on Sept. 14. And on this night, the Mounts would again walk away with a 2-1 victory.

Pioneers snap Mounts' Streak

Paul Keller waited ... and waited ... and waited ... in front of the Lampeter- Strasburg goal as the ball bounced around in the zone in front of him and Ephrata, trailing 1-0, tried to organize one final attempt at a comeback in the waning seconds of another Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two boys soccer clash at Ephrata Middle School.

“I wasn’t looking at the clock the whole game,” said Keller, the Pioneers’ senior goalkeeper. “I didn’t want to know how close we were (to the final whistle). I wanted to stay in it the whole time. When I finally heard the buzzer, I chest-bumped our center-back, Seth (Beers), right away. I was pretty happy.”

Pioneers rush past Mounts

The Phantom of the Opera appeared out of the shadows and dashed across the field at the conclusion of the Lampeter-Strasburg band’s energetic pregame performance.

The mysterious masked interloper would provide the evening’s last bit of drama, as the Pioneers dominated from the opening whistle on their way to a 61-6 [boxscore] Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two football victory over Ephrata.
