Weidman has Major Impact at Ephrata

You simply can’t miss Andre Weidman.

His powerful 6-foot-1, 205-pound frame makes him stand out on the football field, where he’s set to embark on his junior season for Ephrata this fall.

But the first thing that grabs your attention is his spectacular hairdo.

“Last year we came up with the idea that we were going to dye our hair blond,” Weidman said of his Mountaineers teammates. “And I’ve stuck with it.”

Warriors top Mounts

After a pair of upset wins in the District Three Class 6A softball tournament, Ephrata had hopes of keeping its Cinderella story alive Tuesday as it faced topseeded Warwick in the semifinal round. It the end, though, Warwick topped the Mounts 10-1 in Lititz — but the game felt tighter than the score line showed.

The Warriors (17-3) opened the scoring in the bottom half of the third inning after center fielder Emily Beale, who bunted her way onto first base. Beale advanced on a double by senior pitcher Katelyn “Lefty” Minney.

Mounts add another upset

Hitting is contagious, and that stood true for 12thseeded Ephrata in its District Three Class 6A softball quarterfinal matchup at fourth-seeded Central York on Thursday.

The Mountaineers laced six hits in topping the Panthers 7-1 to record their second straight upset of the tournament and cement their spot in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Central York’s Ava Beamesderfer came out slinging the ball, not allowing a Mountaineers baserunner over the first two innings. On top of that, Beamesderfer struck out four of the six Ephrata batters she faced in the first two frames of play.

The Mountaineers needed a spark.

Mounts slip past State College

No. 9 seed Ephrata (13-4) made the most of its road trip to No. 8 seed State College (10-5), knocking off the Little Lions 8-7.

Paced by Brock Boyer (five goals), the Mountaineers were in front 3-1 after the first quarter, 7-4 at halftime and 8-5 at the end of the third quarter.

Ephrata keeper Ryan Lindberg collected 14 saves.

It’s the first district playoff win since 2014 for the Mountaineers, who will travel to top-seeded and unbeaten Central York on Wednesday, scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
