Griffin Sets New Mark for Mounts

It was impossible for Jasmine Griffin to hide from the number. Every student who crossed her path seemed to mention it.

Twelve points. That’s all Ephrata’s senior needed. No big deal, right? Griffin can score 12 points in her sleep.

These points were different. They were going to place her atop the program’s all-time scoring list. Anticipation was there from the opening tip. Fans cheered a little louder after Griffin’s baskets. They counted down in their heads.

“We ask a lot of her,” Ephrata coach Brian Cerullo said. “She always delivers. There’s a lot of pressure on nights like this. She was able to deliver again.”

Program Buoys Mountaineers

Even competitive swimmers spend more time on land than in water, so dry-land training is an important aspect of any competitor’s development.

The Ephrata swim team takes dryland training so seriously, the Mounts don’t just use weights and resistance bands. They make sure they are learning from the most successful in the sport while working out.

Two-time Olympian and three-time Olympic medalist Katie Hoff Anderson has partnered with Ephrata through her Synergy Dryland program. Anderson is not there in person at Ephrata, but she does consult with head coach Mickey Molchany and Ephrata’s staff regularly through Zoom to refine the workouts for the swimmers’ needs.

Ephrata on Top Again

Ephrata continued its strong swimming campaign in Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two on Thursday afternoon by sweeping Conestoga Valley, 109-59 in boys meet and 121-26 in girls.

Both sides were mixing up their usual lineups, sometimes to prep swimmers for the upcoming L-L meet in February or just to get them experience in different events.

Still, there were a few multi-event winners, including Bria Burkholder, who won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:19.24 and the 100 freestyle in 58.80. That led the Ephrata girls to a sweep of the 11 events.

Streaks Win to Stay on Bubble

Don’t look now, but local girls basketball teams are getting down to the nitty-gritty when it comes to accumulating all-important District Three power points.

The clock is counting down to the end of the regular season, and squads are now in final jockeying mode to earn an invite to the playoffs.

When Ephrata unloaded the bus at Manheim Town-ship on Wednesday night, both the Mountaineers and the Blue Streaks – who hit the week hovering around the cut line in Class 6A – needed a victory to remain in line for a bid.
