Mounts tie with Eagles


Cocalico’s Aaron Weitzel sent shots high and wide of the Ephrata goal during Thursday’s nonleague boys soccer clash in Ephrata.

But with 6:49 left in regulation and his team trailing by one, the junior drew a foul in the box and buried the penalty kick, netting the equalizer in a 1-1 draw between the backyard rivals.

Mounts blast Vikings


FREDERICKSBURG — After both teams suffered Week One blowout losses, Ephrata and Northern Lebanon were looking to answer some questions heading into Friday’s Lancaster- Lebanon League Section Three opener.

As it turned out, Ephrata seemed to have figured some things out while it was back to the drawing board for the Vikings.

Hempfield edges Mounts


In the first of Tuesday’s semifinals, the Knights (13-4) jumped out to an 8-3 lead over the Mountaineers (14-5) then went cold, as Hempfield was held to one goal over the second and third quarters.

“We just moved it around a lot and were playing with each other. And then we got away from it,” Hempfield midfielder Kohl Wesner said.

Mounts Secure Matching Section Championships


Zach Werner lined up on the sun-soaked javelin runway at Ephrata for one final series of throws on his home turf. The Ephrata boys were closing in on a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two title — their first in 30 years — and the senior thrower wanted to have a hand in history as the Mountaineers marched toward a 106-44 win over visiting Solanco.

“We just wanted to finish out the season strong,” Werner said. “For us seniors, we just wanted to win the section. Ephrata sports haven’t really won many titles. I play football, too, and we haven’t won much, so if feels good to win the section.”
