Shelley Notches 300th

Adrian Shelley’s 300th win as Ephrata’s baseball coach, a 6-2 defeat of Cedar Crest on April 14, came and went quietly.

It shouldn’t have. It’s an indication of how consistent the Mounts have been in baseball during Shelley’s 23 years coaching his alma mater.

His teams have won 10 section titles, four Lancaster- Lebanon League titles and District Three championships in 2016 and 2018.

Ephrata Squads Dominate Cocalico

Ephrata has a lot of depth and talent on both of its track and field squads this year. That was readily apparent when the Mountaineers hosted neighborhood rival Cocalico on Monday.

On the girls side, Ephrata has a terrific combination of senior leadership and a stock of underclassmen, many of which excelled during the Mounts’ 94-55 Section Two victory.

“It’s not just the freshmen, but sophomores. We’ve got green kids, but they really complement each other well,” Ephrata coach Matt White said. “That tutorial from the seniors is really trickling down to these freshmen. They’ve done a tremendous job of wanting to get better every week.”

Wait Makes Mounts Savor Section Title

Good things come to those who wait.

After sitting through an almost two-hour doubles match, three of Ephrata’s boys singles tennis players then went out and won their matches, giving the Mountaineers a 5-2 win over Manheim Central for the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two title Monday at Ephrata.

“It feels great. It’s been the first time in my four years,” said Chase Wilson, Ephrata’s No. 1 player. “I’m just glad to have this great team and all the competition that we face.”

It was the Mountaineers’ first section title since 1993.

Lady Mounts Post Solid Effort in Win

Despite only being a freshman, Lampeter- Strasburg’s Colin Whitacre was well aware of what happened the last time the Pioneer boys faced Ephrata on the track.

“We lost to them two years ago by one point. I knew that, so I was expecting a really close meet,” he said.

Whitacre did his part to reverse that result during Monday’s meet. The frosh went out and won the 1,600-meter run in 4:36 and the 3,200 in 10:28.

In fact, the Mountaineers were leading the points when Whitacre and sophomore teammate Ben Devine took first and second in the 3,200. The swing gave Lampeter-Strasburg the lead and the 1,600 relay team’s victory to close the running portion clinched a 79-71 victory.
