Ephrata Girls Clinch Crown

With the sun to her back, a weary Chelsea Brubaker pulled herself along the stretch of the purple track at Ephrata, buffeted by shouts of encouragement from the infield and the threats of heavy footsteps from the rest of the runners in the 400-meter dash gathering behind her.

“I was just focusing on the end line,” said Brubaker, an Ephrata senior. “I saw the other girl’s shadow behind me and told myself, ‘No, you can’t stop.’”

Brubaker held off the shadow — belonging to Elizabethtown’s Rachel Wood — to win the one-lap race at 1:03.0. The win pulled the host Mountaineers toward a 105-44 dual-meet victory and the light of a Lancaster- Lebanon League Section Two title. The Ephrata boys also picked up a senior day win, defeating Elizabethtown, 96-54.

Philadelphia Bow for Senior Runners

PHILADELPHIA — For six years, McCaskey’s Nathan Henderson and Ephrata’s Zach Lefever logged countless miles together, as friends and as foes, competitive and cordial, while their running careers blossomed in Lancaster County.

Friday, the L-L League senior runners shared the stage and the prestige of the Penn Relays, where they finished fourth (Henderson) and fifth (Lefever) in the high school boys 3,000-meter run as the sun set on a warm afternoon at Franklin Field.

Bears Bounce Back Strong

Elizabethtown’s Nick Stoner came one out short of a complete game on Friday, but still managed to record the final out once stepping off the mound.

Throwing 102 pitches before facing the final batter, the senior swapped places with first baseman Chad Caley as Ephrata’s Ashton Sensenig stepped up to the plate. Sensenig connected on Caley’s fourth pitch of the game, lining a shot toward right field, but Stoner was there to make the grab.

The senior jumped up and reached across his body, snaring the ball to close out Elizabethtown’s 6-1 win over Ephrata in Section Two baseball.

Crystal Hartman on the Rise with Raiders

When an athlete excels at something in high school, the hope is that, when that person matriculates to college, one of the coaches there will have a background in that event. Maybe even be a former All-American.

That’s the case with Crystal Hartman.

In her years with the Ephrata High School girls track and field team, she competed in a number of events, but the javelin was her best and she finished fourth (2014) and seventh (2013) in the PIAA championships.
