Knights Ride Fast Start to Win


Hempfield’s start — three goals in the opening four minutes of Wednesday night’s game at Ephrata — was impressive enough. But, the finish of the Lancaster- Lebanon League boys lacrosse showdown was even better for the Black Knights.

After all, Hempfield ran off the last 12 goals of the contest and posted a 20-4 victory at Mountaineer Field.

Game on the Line


Ephrata did not hold a lead in its Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two girls basketball game at Garden Spot until the final minute of play, when sophomore Gabbie Gerola-Hill nailed a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left.

Yet, that lead lasted just 12 seconds, until the Spartans’ Olivia Usner drilled a triple of her own.

The Mountaineers got the ball back, and with a tie game, Kandice Liebl was fouled with nine seconds to play. The junior’s first shot at the line went off the rim, but she calmly sank the second, and Ephrata held on for an exciting 34-33 victory.

Eagles edge Mounts


An early surge of pressure from No. 9 Cumberland Valley (13-7-0), capped by Austin Warren’s goal in the 10th minute, helped the Eagles earn the other spot in the district final.

“It’s been a really good season for us,” Eagles coach Matt Billman said, “and we really renewed an emphasis on attacking. We said, ‘Let’s attack. Let’s make the other team adjust to us.’ We just really stressed that, in the first 5-10 minutes, let’s go at these guys and get after their backs.”

Buckskins oust Mounts


LEBANON — Utilizing the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach, Conestoga Valley advanced to the Class 4A semifinals of the District Three girls soccer championships with a 3-1 victory over Ephrata on Saturday at Cedar Crest.

Eleven days after the Buckskins (19-2-1) topped the Mountaineers 1-0 in the L-L tournament semifinals, CV used the same defensive pressure, with the same success.
