Mounts claim LL Baseball Title


Ephrata's motto this season was “Defend the Turf.”

The Mountaineers did that, dealing Penn Manor a 7-2 defeat Thursday night in the L-L League title game on the new turf surface of War Memorial Field.

Mounts handle Hempfield


Having grown up with many of them, Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish knows Hempfield’s hitters.

“They’re pretty good,” he said.

Ephrata’s senior right-hander knows something else.

“If you make pitches,” he said, “you can get anyone out.”

Fogarty-Harnish made his pitches Tuesday, going the full six innings in a 14-2 win over the Section One champions and defending league champs in an L-L semifinal at sunny but windy War Memorial Field in Ephrata.

Streaks top Mounts


Once again, Manheim Township and Hempfield left little doubt which are the elite of the L-L League boys' lacrosse programs.

Top-seed Manheim Township scored 14 first-quarter goals, including two in the opening 13 seconds, to zip past fourth-seeded Ephrata by a 26-7 score in the first of two tournament semifinals played Tuesday at Conestoga Valley High School.

Lady Mounts win Section Title


They gathered in the shadow of the grandstands Monday afternoon, Ephrata parents and coaches, throwers, runners and jumpers, as the sun sank and Kay Liebl set the school’s pole vault record higher and higher.

As the Mountaineer junior shot over the bar at 9-feet, 5-inches, the howls rained down from the back of the bleachers and cheers swept across the adjacent hill filled with purple-clad supporters.

Liebl’s pole vaulting punctuated Ephrata’s 92-58 win over visiting Cocalico, an undefeated dual-meet season and Ephrata’s fourth straight Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two title.
