Bears Find Momentum

On paper, Monday’s 16-8 loss to Hempfield appears bad on paper for the Elizabethtown boys’ lacrosse team. Look closer, though, and you’ll see that the Bears battled back in the second half of the defeat, outscoring the Knights, 7-6.

“I think we didn’t have the intensity we needed when we started coming out at the beginning of games,” E-town junior midfielder Tom Poulos said. “After Hempfield we really set a tempo to stay up there and come out hard and be ready to go.”

E-town carried that momentum into Thursday’s home matchup against visiting Ephrata. The Bears took an early four-goal lead in the opening period, and stretched their advantage to seven goals by halftime in rolling to a 16-8 Lancaster-Lebanon League win over the Mounts (2-1 league, 3-2 overall).

The Mountaineers already clinched a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two victory but trailed by a few paces in the final event of the blustery afternoon.

CD East eliminates Lady Mounts

Points may be what appear on the scoreboard and in the box score, but the defensive numbers that CD East put up in its 59-28 win over Ephrata in Tuesday's night's District 3-AAAA girls' basketball round of 16 were just as impressive as any offensive stats.

The Panthers forced 26 turnovers, and blocked 12 shots put up by the Mounts. They also held the visitors without a field goal for a 13:32 stretch of the first half while building a 30-5 halftime lead.

Frees, Mounts, take third at Leagues

While Manheim Central senior Zach Waltz might not have seen winning the Lancaster-Lebanon League individual rifle championship in his immediate future when he awoke Saturday morning, he saw the targets well enough at the event to make it happen.

“I’ve been shooting pretty well lately,” said Waltz, who plans on attending Cornell University to major in viticulture and enology, which involves wine making and vineyard development. “I feel like I have been improving as the season has gone on. I didn’t expect this, but it is a pleasant surprise.”

Waltz earned the only perfect score of 200 in the 42-shooter field to win the individual crown at Conestoga Valley High School. Freshman Willoh Robbins of Garden Spot finished second with a 199 and three centers while Evan Frees of Ephrata placed third with 199 and two centers.
