Mounts Pull Away from Spartans

Something had to give.

If Garden Spot won Friday, it would break a 25-game losing streak. If Ephrata won, it would start afresh. After winning four games in a row to end last season, Ephrata lost a heartbreaker to Elco last week by a point.

One way or another, this week, someone would start a new streak.

ELCO slips past Mounts

Thanks to an extra point, Elco held on for a 28-27 Friday night at Ephrata’s War Memorial Field.

The Mountaineers (0-1) looked like they were in control after Andre Weidman returned a kickoff 93 yards to give Ephrata a 27-21 lead. Kicker Ryan Honberger, who made three previous extra points, missed the point after.

On the Raiders’ (1-0) first play from scrimmage after the Ephrata score, Jake Williams swept to the right sideline and then cut back to the middle of the field, racing across to the opposite side to score a 71-yard touchdown.

Barons win Opener

Manheim Central-Ephrata has been one of the premier Lancaster-Lebanon League girls soccer rivalries of the 21st century, and what better way to kick off the 2020 L-L Section Two campaign than with another showdown?

“The players change, but the rivalry remains,” said Barons coach Andrew Stoltzfus, happy to get back on the pitch.

Happy as well to be playing, veteran Ephrata coach Wes Deininger said, “I kind of feel we’ve been trying to find our feet the whole preseason.”

Mounts drop heartbreaker to Eagles

MECHANICSBURG — After over 90 tense minutes that featured a multitude of scoring opportunities, Cumberland Valley finally struck gold Tuesday night.

A brilliant cross from the right wing by Jaxton Gerhart found the head of forward Emily Mashinki, who calmly buried the ball in the corner of the net to secure a 2-1 overtime victory over Ephrata in a District Three Class 4A girls soccer semifinal contest at Cumberland Valley.
